The days' burdens have left me in haste,

Yet, despite my early pursuit of hopes, I move slowly.

And every day that comes to me teaches me

That in this day of mine I stand in fear of death.

And I do not doubt, even if my allotted lifespan is prolonged,

That my day lies between the Fish and the Ram.

I blame my soul and rebuke it for laziness

When I wake at night to work.

And it submits to my reproach and appeases me,

Yet it is the deceitful one, calling me to laziness.

How can I deal with my heart's blindness, when my eye has seen

    The reversals of people's fortunes?

How many a man passed the night in power and honor,

    With clans, wealth, and servants,

Then death came upon him at dawn, assailing him,

Or calamities, after power and joy.

So he spent the night in a shroud between the earth's stone slabs,

Or captive in prison, bound in neck-irons and heavy fetters,

Or weighed down by illness that troubled him all night,

Turning from side to side, captive to suffering and ailments.

    يتلوه يوم من الأهوال متصل

    My day of death is a day I have come to hate;

A day of unending terrors follows it.

For death has made equals, though its blows have not yet fallen,

    Of kings and lowly peddlers.
