The clever man has indeed sworn by the Lord of daybreak:

There is no cargo this year but these leaves.

People have suffered losses hauling it,

For it does not cover the market levy.

I ply the oar from early morning,

And gulp down water when twilight fades.

    I return home in darkness,

I climb to the roof with not a spark of life left in me.

    من شدّة الغمّ أشيلُ الطبق

    She serves the bread as is her custom;

From intense distress, I lift the tray.

Worse than this and that is that I

Pay my tax in coins with intact rims.
