قل للذي بصروف الدهر عيّرني
هلhas ...? عاندopposed الدهرtime إلاexcept منone who لهhe has خطرimportance
هل عاند الدهر إلا من له خطر
Say to the one who taunted me for the vicissitudes of time:
Tell those who mocked me in fortune's turns
Has time opposed anyone but those of consequence?
None withstands fate's blows but those it concerns
أماdo you not ترىsee البحرthe sea تعلوfloat فوقهabove it جيفٌcarcasses
أما ترى البحر تعلو فوقه جيفٌ
وتستقرّand rest بقاصيin the remotest part of قعرهits bottom الدررthe pearls
وتستقرّ بقاصي قعره الدرر
Do you not see the sea, with carcasses floating upon it,
Do you not see how above the sea's swell
While pearls rest in the remotest depths of its bed?
Float carcasses while pearls lie calm in its depth
وفيand in السماءthe sky نجومstars غيرnot ذيhaving عددnumber
وفي السماء نجوم غير ذي عدد
وليسand not يكسفis eclipsed إلاexcept الشمسthe sun والقمرand the moon
وليس يكسف إلا الشمس والقمر
And in the sky are stars beyond number,
In the sky are countless stars, bright and true
Yet only the sun and moon are eclipsed.
Yet only the sun and moon suffer eclipse
