الناسpeople يخدعُdeceive بعضهمsome of them بعضاothers
الناس يخدعُ بعضهم بعضا
محضواthey made pure التخادُعmutual deception بينهمamong themselves محضاutterly
محضوا التخادُع بينهم محضا
People deceive one another.
People deceive each other
They have made their mutual deceit pure and unalloyed.
Deception amongst them is pure
ولقلّماand seldom تلقىyou meet بهاin it أحداanyone
ولقلّما تلقى بها أحدا
متنزّهاabove reproach يحميprotects لهfor himself عرضاhonor
متنزّها يحمي له عرضا
And seldom do you meet anyone there
Rarely will you find one
Who is above reproach and safeguards his honor.
Of integrity protecting his honor
البسmingle with جميعall الناسpeople محتملاshowing forbearance
البس جميع الناس محتملا
للعالمينtoward everyone وكنand be لهمfor them أرضاearth
للعالمين وكن لهم أرضا
Mingle with all people, showing forbearance
Bear with all people
Toward everyone, and be as earth to them.
Be like earth to both worlds
فلئنfor if indeed غضبتyou grow angry لكلat every حادثةmishap
فلئن غضبت لكل حادثة
ترمىyou are assailed بهاwith it لاno قلّseldom ماparticle completing 'seldom' ترضىyou are content
ترمى بها لا قلّ ما ترضى
For if you grow angry at every mishap
So if you get angry at every event
Hurled at you—no, seldom will you be content.
You will be tossed around, scarcely pleased
