أحقّmost deserving الناسpeople بالصفعof being slapped الجلالmighty
أحقّ الناس بالصفع الجلال
فتىa youth يهوىloves الملاحbeauties بغيرwithout مالmoney
فتى يهوى الملاح بغير مال
Of all people, the most deserving of mighty slaps
The most deserving of a slap is an impetuous lad
is a youth who loves beauties without money.
Who covets sailors without money at hand.
فإنfor if كتبhe wrote الشقيّthe wretch كتابa letter عطفaffection
فإن كتب الشقيّ كتاب عطف
فقدthen indeed طلبhe sought المحالthe impossible منfrom المقالwords
فقد طلب المحال من المقال
For if the wretch writes a letter seeking affection,
If an unhappy wretch pens a letter of love,
then he has sought the impossible through words,
He seeks the impossible through mere words.
وضيّعand he squandered درهميهhis two dirhams بغيرwithout حزمprudence
وضيّع درهميه بغير حزم
وصارand he became فضيحةa disgrace فيin كلevery حالcircumstance
وصار فضيحة في كل حال
and squandered his two dirhams without prudence,
He wastes his dirhams without any sense
and become a disgrace in every circumstance.
And becomes a scandal in any case.
وكانand he was كمنlike someone who شكاcomplained ضرباتthrobs ضرسa molar
وكان كمن شكا ضربات ضرس
فداواهso he treated him الطبيبthe physician منfor الطحالthe spleen
فداواه الطبيب من الطحال
And he was like someone who complained of a throbbing molar,
He is like one complaining of the ache of a molar
so the physician treated him for a spleen ailment.
Who is cured by the doctor through bloodletting.
