O you who slay your own soul with blame and rebuke,
O you who blame yourself and make excuses,
And seek more righteous deeds for it,
Yet seek to augment what is already good in your deeds,

إلى القبائح في الأفعال والكسل
Reproach it, for by its nature, if indulged, it sinks
For it is in one's nature, if you let it slide,
Into shameful deeds and sloth.
To descend into vice, into acts and laziness base.

وكل خلق له في جنسه عصب

من الرذال وأهل الفضل والنبل
And every person has bands of companions among his own kind,
In every kind of person some fibre you'll find
Among the base and those of virtue and nobility.
Of nobility or meanness or honor entwined

So rejoice when the noble love you or praise you,
So rejoice when the noble show liking for you,
And grieve when you are favored by the base.
But grieve when the riffraff claim you as their own.
