O Lord, Your pardon for an old, crooked-footed man,
O Lord, forgive an old and weak man
Whom time's vicissitudes have schooled through ruin.
Whom the vicissitudes of fate have worn down

Have mercy on a poor stranger, crooked-footed, whom
Have mercy on a poor, lonely, devout man
Disability has kept from earning a living and practicing a trade.
Whom misfortune has kept from livelihood and craft

Were it not for disability, I would have sought my livelihood
If not for misfortune, I would not seek my living
Only by striking with the sword's point and leather shields.
Except by wielding the sword and the lance

I've reached seventy without a single day
A day when I am gladdened with gifts in both its halves.
That gladdens my heart with gifts

When I fall ill, my visitors are beggars—
When sick, my nurses are flies
Sasan's children, people of hardship and emaciation.
The children of Persia, accustomed to harm and roughness

I and a group of them have a nature
Each a sorely tried man whose lineage is traced to forebears.
That grows from every tester toward weakness

Yet my people and kinsmen are knowledgeable
How far apart are pure pearls and shells!
Worlds apart from the sincere and the fraudulent

From weapons to tales and snippets.

Driven from place to place, bewildered over their livelihoods,
Wanderers perplexed in their livelihood
The poor man obtains no justice from the world.
The poor man gets no share of the world

In the heat, people shelter behind sackcloth screens, amid comforts,
People seek coolness in tents, in plenty
While we, in the heat, are on open plains like a target.
While we seek coolness in waste, like a target

They drink iced water and snowmelt in comfort
Snow-water and rain-cloud water, with gentle care.

Drinking like dogs, with no cup for anyone drawing water.

I liken people in this world to a gathering
It casts down fruit to them from its clusters
Shaded by a date palm with plentiful fronds.

When I eat my little bread scraps in hunger,
So praise God, whose sustenance in small amounts
With dates and water, I have reached the height of extravagance.

So praise be to God: my sustenance, in its scant portions,
Leave this and speak of a considered matter
Is the sparrows' sustenance: they are content with the scantest feed.
