يا رب أنت مؤمّلي
يومin times of البطالةidleness والعملand work
يوم البطالة والعمل
O Lord, You are my hope,
O Lord, you are my hope
in times of idleness and work.
In days of idleness and work
مفتاحthe key رزقيmy livelihood فيin يديtwo hands
مفتاح رزقي في يدي
كYour (suffix completing ‘hands’) وقفلهand its lock عندat times of الفشلfailure
ك وقفله عند الفشل
The key to my livelihood is in Your hands,
The key to my sustenance is in my hand
and it is locked in times of failure.
And you close it at my failure
فامننso bestow favor عليّupon me بفتحهby opening it
فامنن عليّ بفتحه
وارغمand rub in the dust بهwith it أنفthe nose of السفلthe vile
وارغم به أنف السفل
So favor me by opening it,
So bless me by opening it
and with it rub the noses of the vile in the dust.
And let it shame the ignoble
