O blind man whose heart is blind!

O blind one with a blind heart,

You are not from Shahr Zur; rather, you are falsehood itself.

You are not from the noble city, but you are baseness itself.

إن تشرّفت بالقرى أو تكثر

إن تشرّفت بالقرى أو تكثر

ت ببئر فمعدن الشر بير

ت ببئر فمعدن الشر بير

If you pride yourself on the villages, or boast

If you rise in status or gain influence,

of Bi'r, then Bir is the mine of evil.

You will be like a well whose essence is evil.

قرية الشرّ والفواحش والظل

قرية الشرّ والفواحش والظل

م ودار يقل فيها السرور

م ودار يقل فيها السرور

A village of evil, indecencies, and oppression,

The village of evil, lewdness and injustice,

and an abode where joy is scarce.

Where joy is scarce.

لو جرت سنة النفير إلى أه

لو جرت سنة النفير إلى أه

ل الجنايات ما عداها النفير

ل الجنايات ما عداها النفير

If it were customary to muster against those

If the call for help went out to its people,

guilty of crimes, the muster would not pass it by.

None would answer except those prone to crime.

قرية ما بها أذان ولا يس

قرية ما بها أذان ولا يس

مع فيها لمسلم تكبير

مع فيها لمسلم تكبير

A village with no call to prayer, nor is heard

A village without a call to prayer, where no Muslim says "Allahu akbar".

within it a Muslim's cry of 'God is greatest.'

You are defective even if you boast like a trumpet,

أنت عطل وإن فخرت كما الطنبور

أنت عطل وإن فخرت كما الطنبور

عطل إذا نأى عنه زير

عطل إذا نأى عنه زير

You are useless, though you boast, just as the tanbur

Defective when the blower leaves it.

is useless when its treble string is gone.

You were in a space of blame until

كنت في فسحة من الذم حتى

كنت في فسحة من الذم حتى

قلت شعرا في نظمه تقصير

قلت شعرا في نظمه تقصير

You were free from reproach until

You composed poetry whose meter is lacking.

you uttered verse whose composition fell short.

So you exposed yourself to ugly blame -

فتعرّضت للقبيح من الذم

فتعرّضت للقبيح من الذم

فأنت المقبّح المهجور

فأنت المقبّح المهجور

Thus you exposed yourself to ugly reproach,

You are the ugly outcast.

and so you are reviled and shunned.
