O Abu al-Qasim, man of letters, O you
O Abu Al-Qasim, the literate one, and O you who
who are my intimate companion in my presence and absence,
Are my intimate whether present or absent,
ماnot أرىI see علماa learned authority يعلمteaches تلميpupil (word beginning)
ما أرى علما يعلم تلمي
ذاpupil (word ending) مليحاhandsome بطالعunder a horoscope محسوبcalculated
ذا مليحا بطالع محسوب
I see no learned man teaching
I do not see any knowledge that teaches my gathering
a handsome pupil under a calculated horoscope,
This beautiful one whose rising is auspicious,
بكتابwith a document مسطرwritten out وشروطٍand stipulations
بكتاب مسطر وشروطٍ
وشهودand witnesses فيin مدرجa scroll مكتوبwritten
وشهود في مدرج مكتوب
with a written document and stipulations,
With a written contract and conditions,
and witnesses in a written scroll,
And witnesses on a written platform,
مشبهresembling عهدةthe warranty of العبيدthe slaves إذاwhen ماemphatic particle
مشبه عهدة العبيد إذا ما
كتبتis written خوفfor fear of حادثa mishap مرهوبdreaded
كتبت خوف حادث مرهوب
resembling the warranty for slaves when
Resembling the contract of slaves when
it is written for fear of a dreaded mishap.
It is written fearing an unexpected accident,
فرّfled حرّاقةHarraqa ولمand did not يغنavail ذاكthat الشthe stipulation (word beginning)
فرّ حرّاقة ولم يغن ذاك الش
رطstipulation (word ending) عنfor طالبa seeker ولاnor مطلوبone sought
رط عن طالب ولا مطلوب
Harraqa fled; no help came from that
The fugitive was set free, and that con-
stipulation to either seeker or sought.

مل بهذا إلى فقيه عليم

I turned with this to a knowledgeable jurist
versed in arranging the terms of instruction.
In the system of learning and its order.

لست في كتبة الشروط عليما
يتجنّىmakes unfounded accusations المحبthe lover والمحبوبand the beloved
يتجنّى المحب والمحبوب
I am not skilled in drafting stipulations;
I am not knowledgeable in the writings of conditions
lover and beloved both make unfounded accusations.
