ياO عبدʿAbd إنّكindeed you قاطعcrossing
يا عبد إنّك قاطع
طلبin pursuit of الغنىwealth عرضthe breadth of البلادthe lands
طلب الغنى عرض البلاد
O ʿAbd, you are crossing
O servant, you have cut off
the breadth of the lands in pursuit of wealth.
Seeking wealth, roaming the lands
فاقبلso accept وصيّةthe counsel of ناصحa well-wisher
فاقبل وصيّة ناصح
لكfor you طالبseeking بابthe gate of الرشدright guidance
لك طالب باب الرشد
So accept the counsel of a well-wisher
So accept the advice of one who counsels you
who seeks for you the gate of right guidance.
Seeker of the door of righteousness
لاdo not تحقرنbelittle (emphatic) علىin المزاjest (word beginning)
لا تحقرن على المزا
حcompletion of 'jest' كلامthe words of محقورa despised one الأعاديthe foes
ح كلام محقور الأعادي
Do not belittle, in jest,
Do not look down on
the words of a despised foe;
The words of the scorned advisor
فالنارfor the fire تلتهمdevours البلاthe lands (word beginning)
فالنار تلتهم البلا
دcompletion of 'lands' وأصلهاand its source شررsparks الرمادthe ashes
د وأصلها شرر الرماد
for fire devours the lands,
For fire consumes countries
and its source is sparks from the ashes.
Though sparked from embers of ash
