قسمُ امرىء برّ صدوق

No, by Him whose servant I am—

No, by Him whom I worship,

the oath of an upright, truthful man—

The oath of an honorable, truthful man,

ما بتّ أفرحُ بالنديم

ما بتّ أفرحُ بالنديم

وبالرفيق وبالصديق

وبالرفيق وبالصديق

I have not spent the night rejoicing in a boon companion,

I do not rejoice in intimate friends,

nor in a companion, nor in a friend.

Nor in companion nor in confidant.

جرّبتهم فوجدتهم

جرّبتهم فوجدتهم

لا يثبتون على الحقوق

لا يثبتون على الحقوق

I tested them and found them

I have tried them and found them

not steadfast in honoring obligations.

To be unfaithful to their duty,

ووجدتهم لا يسلمون

ووجدتهم لا يسلمون

من التقاطع والعقوق

من التقاطع والعقوق

And I found them not free

And found them not to abstain

of mutual estrangement and disloyalty.

From estrangement and disobedience,

فقبضت نفسي عنهمُ

فقبضت نفسي عنهمُ

إلا على ظهر الطريق

إلا على ظهر الطريق

So I withdrew myself from them,

So I have restrained my soul from them

except on the open road.
