    ولقاء وجهك لي من الفرج

    My longing, Abu Ishaq, troubles me;

    and seeing your face brings me relief.

    Do not charge me with the fault of one intent on

    estrangement, nor of a foolish boor.

    And I speak—so hear the words of one offering an excuse,

    not the words of one in need of arguments.

    My excuse to you arises from my lameness,

    and the [verse] concerning blame upholds your excuse.

    Thus the two excuses became equal and balanced,

    between blindness and the lasting infirmity of lameness.
