Is that I am bound to bankruptcy and destitution;

Is that I am hosted by destitution and nothingness

وأن مكتسبي بالذل من نفر

وأن مكتسبي بالذل من نفر

لا ينسبون إلى جود ولا كرم

لا ينسبون إلى جود ولا كرم

And that my earnings come through humiliation from a group of men

And that my earnings through humiliation from some people

Who are known for neither liberality nor generosity;

Are not attributed to generosity or nobility

وأنّني أحنف في أرض مغربة

وأنّني أحنف في أرض مغربة

ما يحويه من عظم

ما يحويه من عظم

And that I am clubfooted in a foreign land,

And that I limp in an uncivilized land

What it contains of bone;

Full of greatness

وأن لي نسبا في العرب فصحّني

وأن لي نسبا في العرب فصحّني

بين النبيط ومن صارت لهم همم

بين النبيط ومن صارت لهم همم

And that I have Arab ancestry, which made me eloquent [uncertain reading],

And that I have ancestry among the Arabs that made me eloquent

Among the Nabataeans and those who have come to possess ambitions.

Among the eminent and those with high aspirations
