أقلل من الخلطة للناس

وعارضِ الأطماع بالياس

وعارضِ الأطماع بالياس

Mingle less with people,

Lessen the potion for the people

and counter your cravings with despair.

And counter greed with despair

واقنع إذا لم يك حظّ بما

واقنع إذا لم يك حظّ بما

بل اللهى من أسفل الكاس

بل اللهى من أسفل الكاس

And, if fortune fails you, be content with what

And be content if fate is not with you

moistens the throat from the bottom of the cup.

With the dregs from the bottom of the cup

واحذر بني آدم وأنس إلى

واحذر بني آدم وأنس إلى

من شئت من وحش ونسناس

من شئت من وحش ونسناس

And beware of Adam's children, and find comfort with

And beware of the sons of Adam and feel close

whomever you wish among wild beasts and apes.

To whichever beast or snake you wish

ولا تحادل أبدا جاهلا

ولا تحادل أبدا جاهلا

محضاً وإن كنت ابن عباس

محضاً وإن كنت ابن عباس

And never argue with someone ignorant

And never argue with an utter fool

through and through, even if you were Ibn Abbas.

Even if you are the son of Al-'Abbas

لا يترك الإنسان أخلاقه

لا يترك الإنسان أخلاقه

طوعا ولو شدّ بأمراس

طوعا ولو شدّ بأمراس

A person does not abandon his character traits

A person does not leave their morals

willingly, even if bound with ropes.

Willingly even if dragged with ropes

ولا تعب ما عشت خلقا وقل

ولا تعب ما عشت خلقا وقل

حسنا على رفق وإيناس

حسنا على رفق وإيناس

And do not fault any creature while you live, and speak

Do not tire as long as you live of good manners

good words, with gentleness and friendliness.

With gentleness and meekness

وجملة الأمر وراس الجحى

وجملة الأمر وراس الجحى

في الصمت أو قول بقسطاس

في الصمت أو قول بقسطاس

And the sum of the matter and the height of wisdom

And the essence of the matter and the best path

lie in silence, or in speech weighed on just scales.

Is in silence or speech with justice

وكلّما أوتيت من نعمة

وكلّما أوتيت من نعمة

فغطّها عن أعين الناس

فغطّها عن أعين الناس

And whenever you are given a blessing,

And whenever you are given a blessing

then conceal it from people's eyes.
