العيشُ بين الرذال شوم
لومهمblaming them ركةweakness ولومand blame
لومهم ركة ولوم
Living among the vile is ill luck.
Living among the vulgar is bleak,
Blaming them is weakness and blame.
Their censure is blame, blame,
ماnot ظالمa wrongdoer جاهلignorant غبيstupid
ما ظالم جاهل غبي
ملزمهthe one who compels him ملزماwhile compelling ظلومdeeply unjust
ملزمه ملزما ظلوم
An ignorant fool is no wrongdoer;
No oppressor is ignorant or stupid,
the one who compels him is deeply unjust in doing so.
His oppression makes him oppressive,
منwhoever لمdid not يكنbe عالماlearned لبيباdiscerning
من لم يكن عالما لبيبا
طبعاby nature أبتrejected طبعهhis disposition العلومthe sciences
طبعا أبت طبعه العلوم
Whoever is not learned and discerning
He who is not naturally wise and learned,
by nature—the sciences reject his disposition.
His nature has refused knowledge,
وكلand every خلقcreature لهfor it مقامa station
وكل خلق له مقام
فيهin it علىaccording to طبعهits nature ويقومand stands
فيه على طبعه ويقوم
And every creature has a station,
And every person has a status
in which it stands according to its nature.
Which agrees with his nature and character,
والجاهلand the ignorant man الرذلthe base فيin عذابtorment
والجاهل الرذل في عذاب
يشقىhe suffers ويشقىand suffers بهbecause of him الكريمthe noble man
يشقى ويشقى به الكريم
And the base ignoramus is in torment:
But the ignorant vulgar suffer torment
he suffers, and because of him the noble man suffers.
And cause the noble torment.
