In a corrupt age, do not mingle

with anyone in it, and abandon boasting.

وخالط الناس ببؤس وإن

كنت غنيا فأظهر الفقرا

And mingle with people in poverty, even if

you are rich—make a show of poverty.

أما ترى النخلة ترمى إذا

ما أبصروا في قلبها البسرا

ما أبصروا في قلبها البسرا

Do you not see the palm tree being pelted when

they spot the unripe dates in its heart?

والنخلة الحائل مهجورة

والنخلة الحائل مهجورة

لا يرفع الناس بها قدرا

لا يرفع الناس بها قدرا

And the barren palm stands abandoned;

people hold it in no esteem.

تسلم من رام ومن صاعد

تسلم من رام ومن صاعد

يفسد فيها الخوص والكفرا

يفسد فيها الخوص والكفرا

It is safe from the thrower and the climber

who damages its fronds and spathe.

كم بين ذي شك ومستيقن

كم بين ذي شك ومستيقن

إن ملت عنه أظهر الغدرا

إن ملت عنه أظهر الغدرا

How far apart are the doubter and the one who is certain!

If you turn away from him, he shows treachery.

فإن تحاماك وكانت له

فإن تحاماك وكانت له

أبهةٌ لا حظك الشزرا

أبهةٌ لا حظك الشزرا

And if he shuns you and possesses

pomp, he eyes you askance.
