إذاif صاحبتyou keep company فاصحبthen keep company with عكبرياa man of ʿUkbarā
إذا صاحبت فاصحب عكبريا
علىon the basis of بذلfreely offering السلامgreetings بلاwithout طعامِfood
على بذل السلام بلا طعامِ
If you take a companion, take a man of ʿUkbarā,
If you befriend, then befriend a generous man
If you seek a companion, then choose one from 'Ukbara,
For greetings freely offered, but no food.
Who greets with peace sans offering food
Generous with his greetings, yet serving no food on the tray;
يريكhe shows you الفضلvirtue فيin صادthe letter ṣād وميمand the letter mīm
يريك الفضل في صاد وميم
وينسىand he forgets الفضلvirtue فيin كافthe letter kāf ولامand the letter lām
وينسى الفضل في كاف ولام
He shows you the virtue in ṣād and mīm,
He shows you virtue in Saad and Meem
He shows you all the virtue in the 'Sad' and in the 'Mim',
And forgets the virtue in kāf and lām.
Yet forgets his grace in Kaaf and Laam
But quite forgets the virtue of the 'Kaf' and of the 'Lam'.
