فقل لصروف الدهر كري على المنى

فقل لصروف الدهر كري على المنى

وقل للمنى كرّي على نوب الدهر

وقل للمنى كرّي على نوب الدهر

Then tell time’s vicissitudes: 'Charge against hopes!'

Tell the turns of fate to keep on favoring me

And tell hopes: 'Charge against time’s calamities!'

And tell favors to keep turning with fate

فماأوقع الإنسان في الخوف كالغنى

فماأوقع الإنسان في الخوف كالغنى

ولا أوقع الإنسان في الأمن كالفقر

ولا أوقع الإنسان في الأمن كالفقر

For nothing makes a person fearful like wealth,

Nothing casts man into fear like wealth

And nothing makes a person feel secure like poverty.

Nothing casts man into safety like poverty
