فيin الحبّlove نارٌa fire ونادىand cried out الحبّlove واكبديalas, my liver!
في الحبّ نارٌ ونادى الحبّ واكبدي
I would ransom him—when I beheld him, there flared
I ransom the one who when I saw him, love's fire was kindled
a fire in Love, and Love cried, 'Alas, my liver!'
And love called out and my liver was inflamed

سقم أشاع نحولا منه في جسدي
And from the languor of his eyes into my body crept
And sickness crept from his eyes to my body
a sickness that spread its wasting through my body.
A sickness that spread emaciation in my body

عدني الوصال فقد عرّيت من جلدي
When we met for a while, I said, 'O my solace,
When we gathered for a while, I said: O my tranquility
promise me union, for I have been stripped of my endurance.'
Unite me with union, for I have been stripped of my skin

He said, 'You are weak of mind.' I said to him,
So he said: You are weak of mind. I said to him:
'Love and reason have never come together in anyone.'
Love and reason have never been fair to anyone.
