I withdrew to drink wine alone, because I
I sit alone drinking wine for I
had tested people, companions and drinking companions.
Have drunk the dregs of people’s company

I found no one sincere in affection, nor did I find
I found none who would clarify affection
a trustworthy brother in hardship and ease.
Or a trusted friend in good times or bad

Would divulge its secrets among people indiscreet

And I congratulated myself and devised my own delight;
I congratulated myself and imagined its pleasures
I sang from my poetry a sage's song:
Singing wisely from my poetry

Find solace apart from friends, O soul, and be patient,
Be patient, my soul, and console yourself
for your patience is better than the presence of a base man
For your patience is better than mean company

who makes me swallow anger and heaps harm upon me,
That makes me swallow anger and expands my pain
and wears my robe—an envier and a foe.
While an envious enemy wears my clothes
