أردت الغسل فانطبقت بغيم

أردت الغسل فانطبقت بغيم

فجاهدت المشقّة باجتهاد

فجاهدت المشقّة باجتهاد

I wanted to bathe, and the sky closed over with clouds,

I wanted to wash, but the clouds clung together,

so I battled the hardship with earnest effort.

So I endured the hardship with great effort.

حملت البرد فيه وكان يوما

حملت البرد فيه وكان يوما

شديد البرد في أيام عاد

شديد البرد في أيام عاد

I endured the cold while doing so; it was a day

I carried the cold water on a day

of bitter cold, as in the days of ‘Ad.

That was very cold in the days of Aad.

وضرّمت الصلا ونشرت ثوبي

وضرّمت الصلا ونشرت ثوبي

على جمر وشيء من رماد

على جمر وشيء من رماد

And I kindled the fire and spread out my garment

And I heated the rocks and spread my clothes

over embers and a little ash.

Over embers and some ashes.

فلمّا أن غسلت وجفّ ثوبي

فلمّا أن غسلت وجفّ ثوبي

تقشّعت السماء على كبادي

تقشّعت السماء على كبادي

Then, when I had washed and my garment had dried,

When I had washed and my clothes were dry,

the sky cleared—to my chagrin.

The sky cleared over my liver.
