I took some white Rajani syrup,
I took from the honeycomb a whiteness
pure, paying a lavish price for it;
Pure, for which I paid a generous price
ومنand from جيّدfine الداذيّthe dādhī (a fermentation additive) ماthat which ليسis not مثلهُits equal
تخيّرهُhe selected it ليfor me فيلسوفa philosopher أبوfather of عمروAmr
and some fine dādhī that had no equal,
And from fine chicory what is unparalleled
selected for me by the philosopher Abu Amr.
Chosen for me by the philosopher Abu Amr
وثلثتand I added a third ingredient منfrom ماءwater الثلوجthe snow ولمand did not أزلI cease
أعالجهI work it بالضربby beating فيin السرsecrecy والجهرand openness
And third I added snow-water, and never ceased
And I took a third part of snow water
working it by beating, in secret and openly.
Beating it constantly in secret and openly
فلماso when صفاit cleared واشتدّand grew strong رمتI sought ارتشافهsipping it
لأسلاso I might forget بهthrough it عنfrom غمّgrief عاقبةthe farthest part الصدرof the breast
So when it cleared and grew strong, I sought to sip it,
When it became clear and strong, I sipped it
to forget through it the grief deep within the breast.
To dispel with it the sorrow of my breast
ورمتand I sought نديماa drinking companion منamong أناسpeople بلوتهمI had tested them
فلمbut did not أرI see فيهمamong them سالمsound الصدرof heart منfrom مكرguile
And I sought a drinking companion among people I had tested,
And I invited a companion of people whose company I tried
but I saw none among them whose heart was free of guile.
But I saw in them no sincerity of heart, only deceit
فلماso when رأيتI saw الناسthe people قدhad قلdiminished خيرهمtheir goodness
وماand not فيهمamong them إلاexcept مقيمone persisting علىin غدرtreachery
So when I saw that people's goodness had dwindled,
When I saw people whose goodness had diminished
and none among them did anything but persist in treachery,
And nothing left in them but treachery
خصصتI singled out بهwith it روحيmy soul وحييتهاand I saluted her بهاwith it
تحسيتهاI sipped it وحديalone وقامand held good بهاfor it عذريmy excuse
I kept it for my soul alone, and saluted her with it;
I devoted it to my soul and revived it
I sipped it alone, and my excuse for it held good.
I made it private, standing alone with it as my excuse
وبتّand I spent the night مبيتَthe repose الطفلof the child دونwithout حلومةa teat
بفيهin his mouth معافىuntroubled منfrom منازلةbattling الفكرthought
And I slept as a child sleeps, without a teat
And I spent the night like a child, devoid of care
in his mouth, spared the struggle with thought.
With a mouth free of conversation and thought
