أرى عالما بالضر والبؤس قد هلك

أرى عالما بالضر والبؤس قد هلك

وآخر عفوا بالجهالة قد ملك

وآخر عفوا بالجهالة قد ملك

I see a learned man who has perished from affliction and misery,

I see a world ruined by harm and misery

And another who, in ignorance, has come to rule without effort.

And another pardoned for its ignorance and folly

فإن يكُ من ربي فصبرٌ على القضا

فإن يكُ من ربي فصبرٌ على القضا

وإن تكن الأخرى فقد خرف الفلك

وإن تكن الأخرى فقد خرف الفلك

If this is from my Lord, then patience with the decree;

If it be the will of my Lord, then patience for fate's decree

But if it is otherwise, the celestial sphere has grown senile.

If it be the other, then the stars have lost their course
