I say, while grief soothes me and makes me ill,

And helplessness keeps me from fortitude's strength:

O people, my patience has been harmed

By my despair of goodness in my family and my children.

So there is no sign of a noble man who would befriend me

With fairness—one I could count by bending my little finger.

I sought among people what they cannot live up to:

A noble, loyal, self-respecting man, beyond reproach.

Where could such a man come from, when the people of this age are by nature given

To discord, breaking pledges, and envy?

    I demanded of my soul what I demanded of them, but it refused;

How, then, can I ask of anyone what I myself have neglected?
