I saw a swaying form, like a branch bent
by the north wind as it blew.
By the northern wind when it blows
لهhe has ثوبa robe يميلsways عليهupon him تيهاproudly
له ثوب يميل عليه تيها
كماjust as التفّentwined القضيبthe branch علىaround القضيبthe branch
كما التفّ القضيب على القضيب
His robe sways proudly upon him,
Wearing a robe that inclines aimlessly
as one branch entwines around another.
As a stick leans upon another stick
فحمّلنيso it burdened me هواهlove for him وكنتand I was غرّاnaïve
فحمّلني هواه وكنت غرّا
بماabout what يلقىencounters المحبّthe lover منfrom الحبيبthe beloved
بما يلقى المحبّ من الحبيب
So love for him burdened me, though I was naïve
He filled me with passion, and I was a fool
about what a lover suffers from the beloved.
For what a lover receives from the beloved
لهhe has جفنانtwo eyelids قدindeed ملياhave both been filled سقاماsickness
له جفنان قد مليا سقاما
يبثانthey both spread السقامthe sickness إلىinto القلوبthe hearts
يبثان السقام إلى القلوب
His two eyelids have been filled with sickness;
He has two eyelids that harbor sickness
they spread sickness into hearts.
