تقنّعت بالقوت القليل تعفّفا

تقنّعت بالقوت القليل تعفّفا

مخافة أن أبلى برد بخيل

مخافة أن أبلى برد بخيل

I made do with meager sustenance out of self-restraint,

I've been content with meager fare from self-respect

For fear of suffering a miser’s rebuff.

Fearing cold reproaches for a niggard's alms.

وإن قليلا يستر الوجه أن يرى

وإن قليلا يستر الوجه أن يرى

إلى الناس مبذولا لغير قليل

إلى الناس مبذولا لغير قليل

Indeed, a little shields one’s face from being seen

Yet a little suffices to veil the face that it be not shown

Exposed before people for more than a little.

To people as proffered, save to no few.
