فعابني قومق على حبّه

Then some people reproached me for loving him

So people blamed me for loving him,

As one loves the ladies of secluded chambers.

Like ladies loving their kittens.

فقلت للعائب في حبّه

قول عليم بالمعاذير

So I said to the critic of my love for him

So I said to those blaming my love,

The words of one well versed in justifications:

Speak wisely with excuses.

قلّة إنصاف بني آدم

علمني حبّ السنانير

علمني حبّ السنانير

The scant fairness shown by Adam’s children

The lack of fairness of Adam's sons,

Taught me to love cats.
