بلوتI tested المسلمينthe Muslims بكلin every أرضland
فلمso did not أرI see فيهمamong them رجلاa man ودوداaffectionate
I have tested the Muslims in every land,
The Muslims have spread to every land
but saw no affectionate man among them.
Yet I have not seen among them a friendly man
وهمand they خيرthe best الورىhumankind أدباin manners وديناand in faith
إذاif صادفتyou encountered ذاone possessing أدبmanners سديداupright
Yet they are the best of humankind in manners and faith,
Though they are the best of mankind in morals and faith
if you meet an upright, well-mannered man.
If you meet one of upright manners
فملتso I turned إلىto اليهودthe Jews رجاءin hope of حرّa noble man
أعاشرُI keep company with منهfrom him مأموناtrustworthy رشيداwise
So I turned to the Jews, hoping for a noble man,
So I inclined toward the Jews hoping for nobility
in whom I might have a trustworthy, wise companion.
To keep company with a trustworthy, righteous one
فلمso did not أرI see فيamong اليهودthe Jews أخاa brother ودوداaffectionate
بلىyes, indeed صادفتI encountered أكثرهمmost of them قروداmonkeys
But among the Jews I saw no affectionate brother;
Yet I did not see among the Jews a brotherly friend
indeed, I found most of them to be monkeys.
Rather, I found most of them vulgar
وملتand I turned إلىto النصارىthe Christians كيso that ألاقيI might meet
صديقاa friend منهمfrom among them ثقةtrustworthy جديداnew
And I turned to the Christians to meet
And I inclined toward the Christians that I might find
a new, trustworthy friend among them.
A friend among them, a new confidence
فكانواso they were فيin القياسcomparison أقلthe least شيءa thing
وعالمهمand their scholar تصادفهyou find him حقوداspiteful
Yet by comparison they were the lowest of all,
Yet they were the least of all
and you find their scholar full of spite.
And their scholar you find spiteful
وهمand they أدنىcloser إليناto us منthan سواهمothers besides them
ترىyou see فيin طبعهمtheir nature لؤماbaseness شديداsevere
Though they are closer to us than the others,
And they are lower to us than others
you see extreme baseness in their nature.
You see in their nature intense wickedness
إذاif رمتyou sought السماحةgenerosity فيamong النصارىthe Christians
طلبتyou sought وإنand even if دنواthey drew near أمراa thing بعيداdistant
If you seek generosity among the Christians,
If you seek nobility in the Christians
you seek something distant, even if they draw near.
You seek, even if they approach, a distant matter

And whoever [remains] on guard against a friend
And whoever hopes for sincerity from a friend
finds exhausting hardship in his life.
Will find in his life great exertion
