تميت القلوب موتنفي السهادا
I have seen that jesting has a pitfall,
I saw jesting has a hump,
That deadens hearts and [possibly: dispels] sleeplessness.
That kills hearts, causing sadness in joy.

ومن وامق كان ينوي البعادا
It comes to you from a hostile companion,
It comes to you from an enemy,
And from a loving one who intended separation.
And a hypocrite who intends to hurt.
فخلso abandon المزاحjesting فلاfor there is no خيرgood فيهin it
فخل المزاح فلا خير فيه

فإن المزاح يذيب الفؤادا
So abandon jesting, for there is no good in it;
So leave jesting, there is no good in it,
For indeed, jesting melts the heart.
For jesting melts the heart.
