قنعت من الدنيا بأدنى معيشة

تقاصر عنّي مرّة وتطول

تقاصر عنّي مرّة وتطول

I have been content with the barest livelihood in this world;

I am content with the basic necessities of life

sometimes it falls short for me, and sometimes it lengthens.

Sometimes it is scarce, sometimes plentiful

فأطولها ما أحضر النفس قوتها

فأطولها ما أحضر النفس قوتها

وأقصرها للحادثات رسول

وأقصرها للحادثات رسول

So at its longest, it brings the soul its sustenance,

The longest is what brings food for the soul

and at its shortest, it is a messenger of calamities.

The shortest are messengers of events

وألزمت نفسي الصبر عن كل شهوة

وألزمت نفسي الصبر عن كل شهوة

إذا لم يكن فيها الحديث جميل

إذا لم يكن فيها الحديث جميل

And I have bound myself to patient restraint from every desire,

And I obliged myself to be patient from all desires

when speaking of it would not be honorable.

Unless the talk therein was beautiful
