I guard my dirhams and defend them,

for my dirhams are my sword and shield.

And all my life I am as miserly with them as I can,

even toward myself, over my food and clothing.

And leaving them to my bitterest enemy,

when I die—be it child or wife—

to eat them and drink them with pleasure,

to tunes of a lute's treble string and its plucking,

and curse me [uncertain reading] and defecate upon my grave,

and never give a single fals in charity on my behalf,

is dearer to me than saying to a friend:

"Kindly help me with five of them,"

only for him to turn me away, as I drag my hem behind me,

while my soul has become like a dog's soul.

Surely my death before that, with a gentle touch,

is dearer to me than poverty with abasement.

For poverty is the ugliest thing ever worn

by a human being, of all garments and attire,

and ugliest on men [uncertain reading] in every land,

even if they claim descent from ʿAbd Shams.
