صبرت على الهمّ في وحدتي

وآثرت همّي على همّتي

I endured sorrow in my solitude,

I have endured grief in my solitude

and preferred my sorrow to my ambition.

And chosen my worries over my ambitions

وأعفيت نفسيَ من لذّة

وأعفيت نفسيَ من لذّة

فإن متّ متُّ على حسرَتي

فإن متّ متُّ على حسرَتي

And I spared my soul pleasure;

I have spared myself the pleasure

so if I die, I die with my regret.

For if I die, I die longing

وما ذاك جهلا ولكنّني

وما ذاك جهلا ولكنّني

ملكت الخلاف على شهوتي

ملكت الخلاف على شهوتي

And that was not out of ignorance; rather, I

It is not out of ignorance, but

mastered resistance to my desire.

I have mastered desire over my passions

تغوّيت فاخرت حسن الثنا

تغوّيت فاخرت حسن الثنا

فلم أعدم الأهل في غربتي

فلم أعدم الأهل في غربتي

I went astray; I boasted of fine praise,

I pretended, so I chose a good reputation

so I did not lack kin while far from home.

And so I did not lack family in my exile

وأعرضت عن سقطات الرجال

وأعرضت عن سقطات الرجال

لكي يعرض الناس عن زلتي

لكي يعرض الناس عن زلتي

And I turned away from men's lapses,

And I turned away from the mistakes of men

so that people would turn away from my lapse.

So people would turn away from my missteps

وطالبت نفسيَ بالواجبات

وطالبت نفسيَ بالواجبات

عليها لغيري فلم أعنت

عليها لغيري فلم أعنت

And I demanded of my soul the duties

And I tasked myself with obligations

it owes to others, so I caused no hardship.

Upon it for others, but I did not help

خلائق حرّ أخي فطنة
