I drank amid hardships during my day,

And amid searing anger, in steady succession.

And I long for night to come, so I may be spared,

For the soul settles within the bones.

Then I dream of terrors during my day,

Just as I had been before sleep.

So in neither state am I free from what

Distresses me [word unclear], even if I become drunk on wine.

And humankind's livelihoods lie between the lawful

And the doubtful, and what is forbidden to seek.

Yet in the lawful I have no share to hope for,

Nor have I been granted enjoyment by unlawful means.

So I do not know: is this due to my ill fortune,

Or are the days at war with the noble?
