قصّر بي عن منازِل الشرَفِ
I am a man whose crooked feet have harmed him;
I am a man who has been harmed by his generosity
they have kept me from the stations of honor.
It has made me fall short of reaching the heights of nobility

I have forebears in a lineage long past,
I have ancestors whose generosity I have inherited
and often my forebears have brought me harm.
And their generosity has long been harmful to me

فارتدى بالعفاف والأنف
My jealous concern for my forebears restrains me,
My zeal for my ancestors draws me back
so I clothe myself in self-restraint and pride.
To modesty and dignity

أبدي غناء وأشتهي تلفي
I perish from hardship and complain of privation;
I reject harm and complain of injustice
I make a show of wealth, yet long for my own death.
I express joy yet long for death

My path of contentment has earned me
I have adopted moderation which gives me
the dignity of wealth and the hardship of an emaciated man.
The dignity of joy and the harm of the feeble

I follow a middle course in every path,
I take the middle path in every doctrine
and what is right lies between falling short and excess.
Truth lies between inadequacy and excess
