وإني لأخلو فيك باليأس والرجا

وحبل رجايَ فيك غيرُ وثيقب

And I am indeed alone with despair and hope concerning you;

Despair and hope - with them alone I confide in you

And the cord of my hope in you is not secure.

Though in you my rope of hope is not secure

أمالت بي الأطماع فيك إلى الردى

أمالت بي الأطماع فيك إلى الردى

وغصّصَني فيك الرجاء بريقي

Desires for you have drawn me toward death;

Ambitions inclined me through you to ruin

And hope in you has made me choke on my own saliva.
