How fine is wheat without darnel!

And how beautiful the world without the Daylamites!

And how wretched the free man whenever he manages

his affairs with the ignorant lion.

His mind melts from what he suffers,

and his body sickens with rage.

So the best condition for him is his death,

rather than endure lowlifes in a sanctuary.

And he claims knowledge despite his ignorance,

    and recites the Qur'an unintelligibly.

He thinks there is a reward for him in that,

yet his due for that is to be reviled.

He disbelieves in God and His signs,

and memorizes the Book, yet shows no mercy.

    And his two scribes loathe him;

if he sleeps, they both say, 'Sleep, and may you never be safe!'

May you never protect yourself from death's evil,

    nor find goodness or gain.

What he abhors has not gladdened a brother of yours.

You wish to be rewarded for sins.

Conceal my longing, lying hidden in sorrow,

and its heat from the people of this world.

But I have hidden it in my heart,

    and you remain forever quarrelsome.
