لاح المشيب فأبكاني على زمن
فيهin it الشبابyouth أميرٌa prince غيرnot معزولdeposed
فيه الشباب أميرٌ غير معزول
Gray hair appeared and made me weep for a time
The grey hair appeared and made me weep over a time
In which youth was a prince, not deposed.
When youth was a prince not deposed,
ولّىhe appointed عليّover me حروباwars إنif فجعتI was bereaved بهof him
ولّى عليّ حروبا إن فجعت به
عندat الوفاةdeath إذاwhen فارقتI parted from مأموليwhat I hope for
عند الوفاة إذا فارقت مأمولي
He put wars in command over me, should I be bereaved of him,
And if wars distressed me in it,
At death, when I part from what I hope for.
