    If a young man, amid life's comforts, holds aloof

    From you, with favorable fortune freely granted,

    And Time contends with him amid uncertainty,

    So he grows miserly and turns from generosity's face,

    With aversion and haughtiness; cast him aside.

    If the unarmed man calls for battle,

    He gives those with weapons the upper hand over himself.

    If the beautiful grow haughty toward you in their pride,

    You find solace in chastity with the ugly.

    عدلت الى التقنع بالمباح

    Whenever what is possessed is also withheld from you,

    You turn to contentment with what is freely available.

    And make peace: to me, well-being lies in peace;

    For most of what you see rests on agreement.

    And if they elude you, you have fully justified yourself;

    And no blame rests upon the seeker.

    And every dainty, fair and sweet,

    Will be cast tomorrow into the privy.
