The decree took effect and silenced the disputant;

It proved the wise man wrong, so the judgment might prevail.

ويطبّ من داء طبيب حاذقٌ

ويطبّ من داء طبيب حاذقٌ

متيقّظ وبجسمه سقم

متيقّظ وبجسمه سقم

And a skilled physician treats an illness—

Alert, yet sickness dwells within his body.

ويسرّ حسبان النجوم وإنما

يجري القضاء فيسعد النجم

And reckoning the stars brings joy, yet

Fate runs its course, and thus the star is auspicious.

وإذا أراد الله إمضاء الردى

وإذا أراد الله إمضاء الردى

وتمامهُ لم ينفع الحزم

وتمامهُ لم ينفع الحزم

And when God wills to bring death about

And see it through, prudence avails nothing.
