A lidded clay vessel, the potter’s handiwork,
An earthenware pot of the potter’s making;
Its maker hardened it in the fire.
Its maker hardened it with fire.

Its lid was fashioned to exact measure,
Its lid was made to fit precisely,
As though it had been traced with a compass.
As though it had been drawn with a compass.

Its band about the middle is like a girdle,
Its band around the middle is like a girdle,
For fear of cats—and fear of mice.
For fear of wasps and fear of mice.
