لاح على وجهه انكسار

إذ خط في وجهه العذار

Dejection appeared upon his face,

When down traced a line upon his face.

صار حمارا وكان خشفا

لا يستوي الخشف والحمار

He became a donkey, though he had been a fawn;

The fawn and the donkey are not alike.

أقبل إدباره فولّى

أقبل إدباره فولّى

وقال قولا به اختصار

His decline set in, so he turned away,

And said, in a few brief words:

أنا الذي كنت قلت كلا

أنا الذي كنت قلت كلا

غيرك الليل والنهار

غيرك الليل والنهار

“I am who I used to be.” I said, “No—

Night and day have changed you.”
