والفقرand poverty داءٌan illness مالهit has no منany آسيhealer
Clubfoot and destitution have worn me down.
Poverty has weakened me and made me gaunt,
And poverty is an illness with no healer
And destitution is an illness with no comfort,
إلاexcept الدراهمthe dirhams وهيَand they غيرnot مجيبةresponsive
ويجيبand answers ماeven when لمhave not أدعهI called it إفلاسيmy destitution
Except dirhams—and they do not answer,
Except dirhams which are unresponsive,
While my destitution answers even when I have not called it.
While my destitution responds to what I never called for.
فلئنso if indeed وهنتI have grown weak فليسthen it is not ذاكthat بمنكرat all surprising
الدهرtime يوهنُweakens أوثقthe firmest الآساسfoundations
So if I have grown weak, that is no wonder:
So if my strength fails, that is no surprise,
Time weakens the firmest foundations.
Time weakens even the firmest foundations.
ولفقدand over the loss of أحلاسيmy garments أضنّI begrudge وإنّماand only
حسنelegance الأديبthe man of letters بجودةthrough the quality of الأحلاسthe garments
And I begrudge the loss of my garments, for only
And from losing companions I have become thinner,
Fine garments lend a man of letters his elegance.
Though the quality of one's companions enhances the person.
وفقدتand I lost إخوانيmy friends الذينwhom أحبّهمI love them
ولبستand I wore بعدهمُafter them أرثthe most threadbare لباسclothing
And I have lost my friends, whom I love,
I have lost the brothers whom I loved,
And after them I donned the most threadbare clothes.
And after them I wore the shroud of bereavement.
وأشدّand the hardest of ذلكthat كلهall of it وأمرّهand its bitterest
سعييmy striving لأطلبso that I may seek ماwhat بأيديin the hands of الناسpeople
And the hardest and bitterest of all this
But harder than all that and bitterer
Is my striving to seek what lies in people's hands.
Is my striving to seek what people possess.
