يا رب سلط على العميان موجبة
ياO ربLord وابدأand begin بأعمىwith the blind man آلthe family of حجّاجHajjaj
يا رب وابدأ بأعمى آل حجّاج
O Lord, unleash a dire calamity upon the blind.
And, O Lord, begin with the blind man of Hajjaj's family.
هوhe الضريرُthe blind man الذيwho يمشيwalks بغيرwithout عصاa staff
هو الضريرُ الذي يمشي بغير عصا
كالنجمlike a star ينقضّplunges down منfrom علياءthe heights of أبراجtowers
كالنجم ينقضّ من علياء أبراج
He is the blind man who walks without a staff,
Like a star plunging from towers on high.
إبليسIblis يعتاذseeks refuge مماfrom what فيهis within him منof نكدill nature
إبليس يعتاذ مما فيه من نكد
وماand not أراهI deem him إذاwhen ماemphatic particle اعتاذhe seeks refuge بالناجيone who escapes
وما أراه إذا ما اعتاذ بالناجي
Iblis seeks refuge from the ill nature within him,
Nor do I think him safe when he seeks refuge.
كأنماas though النارthe fire فيin أعضائهhis limbs ضرمa blaze
كأنما النار في أعضائه ضرم
هبّتblew بهcarrying it along الريحthe wind فيin عصفviolent gusting وإرهاجand dust-stirring
هبّت به الريح في عصف وإرهاج
As though fire blazed within his limbs,
Swept along by the wind in furious, dust-raising gusts.
