وارجع عن هجري إذا رخص الخبز
Bread grew costly, so I took refuge in estrangement when it grew costly.
Bread became expensive, so I resorted to estrangement
And I return from my estrangement when bread grows cheap.
Return from my estrangement when bread becomes cheap

وليس معي خبز لعمري هو العجز
My standing at the beloved’s door, seeking union with him,
I stand at the door of love seeking its union
While I have no bread—by my life—is helplessness.
Yet I have no bread, for I am utterly helpless
