واللهand God يعطيgives منwhomever يشاءHe wills ويمنعُand withholds
Blaming time is repugnant folly.
Blaming fate is foolishness with no gain
And God gives to whom He wills and withholds.
God gives whom He wills and denies whom He denies

And sustenance is subject to a Creator's wisdom,
Livelihood is predestined with wisdom of the Creator
From four that were stated, four matched them.
It is said there are four, each flanked by four

فالنحسso ill fortune يخفضbrings low والسعادةand good fortune ترفعraises up
Good fortune and ill fortune work ceaselessly through wisdom;
Fortune and misfortune are constant with wisdom
So ill fortune brings low, and good fortune raises up.
Misfortune brings low and good fortune raises up

And it has its causes; whomever it lets down,
They have causes, so he who is stuck with misfortune
Then he is proof that he cannot prosper.
It indicates he will not succeed

Goals may elude the resourceful man,
A capable man may fail to obtain what he hopes for
While the fainthearted coward wins the best of them.
While a coward who bows may gain the best

Through good fortune the discerning man rises, and others besides him—
The wise advance through hard work while others
Whoever is clubfooted, and whoever is missing a hand.
Whether lame or handless stay in their place

Except me, for I suffer painful torment
A straitened livelihood, and a blessing that brings no benefit.
Straitened living though blessings are no use

I have ambition, insight, and natural talent;
I have ambition, perception, talent
So without good fortune, what do you see me accomplish?
Without hard work you'll not see me make any

My hope tells me of approaching good fortune,
My hopes speak to me of future hard work
After my hair has grayed—self-talk that deceives.
Though hopes in old age are self-deceit

Time will not bring me prosperity again,
If time's wheel should turn favourably for me
Until youth returns to me and comes back.
Youth and prime will return to me

And I foolishly reproach treacherous time:
Complaints to time for its sorrows are foolishness
Anger grows, and sorrow does not abate.
Frustration increases but does not depart

My reproach against the days is entrenched ignorance:
Reproaching days is profound ignorance
Reproach that goes to waste, and an incantation that does not help.
Reproach is wasted like a slip of paper

My silence amid sorrow's choking pangs comes from wisdom [uncertain reading];
My silence over braves' misfortunes is wisdom
The silence of a man who feigns deafness and does not hear.
The silence of one circumspect who does not hear

The vipers too are silent due to cunning
And indeed the frog is caught unawares because of its croaking.
As is the croaking frog for its protection

Death reaps while The Sustainer sows

Death is a cliff and doom an abyss
And death brings low, and the fates raise up.
Death brings low while doom raises up
