كنbe معwith الناسpeople كماas أنyou (first part of أنت)
كن مع الناس كما أن
تyou (completion of أنت) معwith النارthe fire المنيرهilluminating
ت مع النار المنيره
Be with people as you
Be with people as you are
are with the illuminating fire.
With the enlightening fire
انتفعbenefit بالنارfrom fire واحذرand beware of
انتفع بالنار واحذر
هاit فبلواهاfor its affliction مبيرهdestructive
ها فبلواها مبيره
Benefit from fire, and beware of
Benefit from the fire but beware
it, for its affliction is destructive.
Its trials are perilous
منwhoever دناdraws near منكto you فقارتthen draw near to
من دنا منك فقارت
هhim ومنand whoever صدturns away فخيرهthen it is for the best
ه ومن صد فخيره
Whoever draws near you, draw near to
Whoever came close to you so it warmed them
him; and whoever turns away, that is for the best.
And whoever turned away so leave them be
واحذرand beware of العميانthe blind ماas long as عشlive (first part of عشت)
واحذر العميان ما عش
تyou (ending of عشت) فهمfor they واللهby God طيرهan ill omen
ت فهم والله طيره
And beware of the blind as long as
And beware the blind what life have they lived
you live: by God, they are an ill omen.
By God they are but birds
كمhow many رأيناwe have seen منof وضيعa base person
كم رأينا من وضيع
عينهhis eye عينan eye ضريرهblind
عينه عين ضريره
How many a base man have we seen
How many lowly we have seen
whose eye is a sightless eye,
Yet their eyes those of the blind
أدخلتit brought غيظاrage علىinto قلheart (first part of قلب)
أدخلت غيظا على قل
بheart (completion of قلب) أخيone possessing عينan eye قريرهcontented
ب أخي عين قريره
bringing rage into the heart
Who brought anger into the heart of my brother
of one whose eye is contented.
The eyes of the spiteful
إنماnothing but الأعمىthe blind man بلاءan affliction
إنما الأعمى بلاء
والبليّاتand afflictions كثيرهmany
والبليّات كثيره
A blind man is nothing but an affliction,
Indeed blindness is a trial
and afflictions are many.
And tribulations aplenty
نظرthe gaze العينينof the two eyes يبديreveals
نظر العينين يبدي
لكto you عنabout كلevery سريرهsecret thought
لك عن كل سريره
The gaze of the two eyes reveals
The sight of the eyes reveals to you
to you every secret thought.
Every intimate secret
والعمىand blindness يسترconceals عنكfrom you الغthe rancor (first part of الغل)
والعمى يستر عنك الغ
لrancor (completion of الغل) منfrom شرّevil وخيرهand good
ل من شرّ وخيره
And blindness conceals rancor from you,
And blindness hides from you the harm
whether born of evil or good.
