Be patient with all that time brings,

Whether it draws you toward relief or toward wonder.

Either relief that brings you near or wonder

إن الهوى لحّة من خاضها عبثا

إن الهوى لحّة من خاضها عبثا

لم يلتجيء حذرا منها إلى هرب

لم يلتجيء حذرا منها إلى هرب

Love is a deep sea; whoever plunges into it heedlessly

Indeed, love is a flash for those who ventured into it vainly

Does not seek refuge in flight out of fear of it.

Not taking precautions to flee from it

صبرا على الحب إن الصبر يعقب ما

صبرا على الحب إن الصبر يعقب ما

يحظى به الحر في جدّ وفي لعب

يحظى به الحر في جدّ وفي لعب

Be patient in love, for patience brings what

Have patience with love, for patience is followed by

The noble man attains, in earnest and in play.

What the free obtains through seriousness and play

من الهوى أن من تهواه ممتنع

من الهوى أن من تهواه ممتنع

فالنوم ممتنع والقلب في كرَب

فالنوم ممتنع والقلب في كرَب

It is part of love that the one you love is beyond reach;

It is the nature of love that the beloved is unattainable

So sleep is beyond reach, and the heart is in anguish.

So sleep is unattainable and the heart is anxious
