  1. للورد ريح عبق

    يا حسنه بين الورق

    The rose has a fragrant scent.

    How lovely it is among the leaves!

  2. يحكي خدودا ضرّجت

    عن خجَل تحت الحدق

    It resembles cheeks flushed

    with shyness beneath the eyes.

  3. يقيم أياما ولا

    يبقى على مر النسق

    It stays for days, but does not

    endure as the days pass in succession.

  4. كالثوب في جدّته

    حتّى إذا صار خلق

    Like a garment in its newness,

    until, when it becomes threadbare,

  5. مزّق في أيدي الورى

    بالذّل تمزيق الخرق

    it is torn apart in people's hands,

    with contempt, as rags are torn;

  6. أو مثل عبد ناصح

    صاحبنا ثمّ أبق

    or like a faithful slave

    who kept us company, then ran away.
