    They said, “Rejoice in the feast day!” I said to them:

    “No one driven into poverty takes joy in the feast.

    None takes joy in the feast but one who has wealth,

    One of the well-to-do, or someone among the non-Arabs,

    Or love’s darling, charming in his coquetry

    For lovers, lovely of figure and foot.

    فيه محييرة ضمّت إلى قلم

    My only share of the feast is the wooden bowl I carry;

    In it, a little inkwell has been placed beside a pen.

    To me, the feast is merely a day I get through

    With no one to anger or hurt me, and no pain.”
